Welcome to the comprehensive repair protocol for your LG washing machine. Designed for individuals looking to perform a Moderate difficulty repair, this step-by-step tutorial demystifies the troubleshooting process. Most users complete this repair in 30–60 min. We cover everything from initial safety precautions to the final component reassembly, ensuring a successful outcome.
Difficulty: Moderate • Est. Cost: $0 (filter clean) — $30–$65 for drain pump assembly • Time: 30–60 min
Safety Warning: Warning: Live voltage can be extremely dangerous. Disconnect the main power supply to your LG unit prior to inspecting internal wiring or mechanical parts.
1. Understanding the OE Drain Fault
OE stands for 'Outlet Error' which simply means the washing machine's main controller gave the drain pump the signal to empty the tub, but after 10 minutes, the pressure sensor still detects water.
- This indicates either a physical blockage preventing water flow or a mechanical failure of the drain pump motor itself.
- If you hear a steady humming noise but see no water moving, the pump is jammed. If you hear absolutely nothing, the pump motor is dead or disconnected.
2. Emergency Manual Draining
Before you can perform any repairs, you must empty the 5 to 10 gallons of dirty wash water trapped inside the drum.
- Open the small square access door at the bottom-left corner of the washer's front panel.
- Pull out the small black rubber drain hose. Aim it into a shallow baking pan or bucket, remove the plug cap, and let the water slowly drain out completely.
3. Inspecting the Coin Catcher Filter
Once the tub is entirely empty, grasp the large circular filter dial located next to the emergency drain hose.
- Turn it counter-clockwise to unscrew and pull the filter out.
- This filter catches debris before it reaches the impeller blades. Expect to find hair ties, coins, lint, and screws. If this was heavily clogged, cleaning it and re-running a cycle might solve your OE error instantly.
4. Replacing a Dead Drain Pump
If the filter was clean but the washer still won't drain, the magnetic impeller pump needs replacement.
- Unplug the washer. Remove the top panel and lower kickplate. Lean the washer backward.
- Locate the pump assembly attached to the thick black tub hose. Squeeze the spring clamps to remove the hoses, unplug the wire harness, and unscrew the 3 mounting bolts holding the pump to the frame.
- Install the OEM LG replacement pump. Reconnect everything and run a 'Rinse & Spin' cycle to test for leaks.
